Spaghetti: The Classic Long Strand
Oh, Spaghetti. This is perhaps the most iconic type of pasta shapes and it’s beloved worldwide for its simplicity and versatility. It’s probably what most people think of when they picture pasta in their minds. The reason for its popularity (apart from being absolutely delicious of course) is its versatility. These long, thin strands are perfect for pairing with a wide range of sauces, from rich marinara to light olive oil and garlic. Their slender shape allows them to twirl gracefully around a fork, capturing just the right amount of sauce in each bite. Whether enjoyed with meatballs or seafood, spaghetti is just one of those timeless pasta types that just never fails to satisfy my taste buds.
Penne: The Sturdy Tube
Penne pasta, characterised by its cylindrical shape with angled ends, is a type of pasta that is prised for versatility and ability to hold up to the really hearty sauces. The hollow centre and ridged surface of penne make it ideal for capturing all the chunky ingredients like vegetables and meats, ensuring that every bite is absolutely jam packed full of delicious flavour. Whether baked in a cheesy casserole or tossed with a spicy arrabbiata sauce, penne is THE ultimate staple in Italian cooking. It’s a classic for a reason!
Orecchiette: The Small Ear
Did you know orecchiette translates to “little ears” in Italian? The more you know! This type of pasta has a unique shape originating from the southern region of Puglia. These small, concave disks have a slightly chewy texture and are perfect for catching thick, hearty sauces. Traditionally served with broccoli rabe and sausage, orecchiette pasta offers a delightful contrast of flavours and textures that evoke the rustic charm of Italian countryside cooking.
Tortellini: The Delicate Parcel
Scrumptious, flavour-packed parcels of goodness, tortellini is a small ring-shaped pasta filled with a savoury mixture of cheese, meats, or vegetables. It’s a beloved specialty of the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy, and each delicate parcel is meticulously crafted by hand, creating a perfect balance of pasta and filling. Whether served in a light broth or dressed in a creamy sauce, tortellini pasta is a decadent indulgence that brings classic Mediterranean-style comfort to any meal.
Fusilli: The Playful Twist
Another stone-cold classic, fusilli pasta is characterised by its spiral or helical shape. It holds onto sauces so, so well and it’s perfect for capturing all the scrumptious bits of ingredients within its coils. Playful pasta types like tortellini also add an all-important visual interest to dishes and are perfect for pairing with both creamy and chunky sauces alike. Whether served cold in salads or hot in pasta primavera, fusilli pasta brings a touch of whimsy to any meal and invites creativity in the kitchen.
Farfalle: The Butterfly Bow
Farfalle is a very distinct type of pasta with its unique bow-shaped design, and it’s prized for its delicate texture that can add a touch of sophistication to any dish. Whether dressed in a light cream sauce or tossed with vibrant vegetables, farfalle pasta is a versatile option that lends itself well to both simple and complex flavours. I always love making farfalle when I’m cooking for children because it’s nice and easy to eat and has a lovely playful shape that kids absolutely love!
Pastina: The Comforting Tiny Pasta
Last but certainly not least, we have pastina; one of the truly comforting tiny pasta types that are perfect for soups, broths, and simple Med-style dishes. These small, versatile pasta shapes are beloved for their ability to add texture and heartiness to a wide range of recipes.
It’s even said that in Italian culture, pastina can cure a nasty cold, mend a broken heart or even just bring a smile to someone’s face. I don’t know about the first two, but putting smiles on faces is something I can vouch for! Whether simmered in chicken broth for a cosy soup or mixed with butter and cheese for a comforting side dish, pastina pasta is a beloved staple that’s sure to warm your soul.

Cheesy Gnocchi
First on the list is my irresistible cheesy gnocchi — a dish that never fails to bring comfort and joy to the table. These pillowy potato dumplings are bathed in a rich and creamy cheese sauce, creating an indulgent treat that is perfect for cosy nights in or special occasions. Topped with a sprinkle of freshly grated Parmesan cheese and a hint of aromatic herbs, this cheesy gnocchi dish is a true crowd-pleaser that will have everyone coming back for seconds.
Mum’s Signature Spaghetti and Meatballs
Next up is a timeless classic that holds a special place in my heart — my mum’s signature spaghetti and meatballs. This dish truly is a labour of love, with tender meatballs simmered in a robust tomato sauce and served over a bed of perfectly cooked al dente spaghetti. Each bite is a symphony of classic Italian flavours, from the savoury richness of the meatballs to the tangy sweetness of the tomato sauce. Whether enjoyed on a busy weeknight or as the centrepiece of a festive gathering, my mum’s spaghetti and meatballs recipe never fails to put a smile on anyone’s face.
Tomato and Garlic Confit Pasta
Last but certainly not least, we have my tomato and garlic confit pasta — a dish that celebrates the vibrant flavours of ripe tomatoes and fragrant garlic. The secret to this recipe lies in the slow-roasted garlic confit, which infuses the sauce with a rich, caramelised sweetness and depth of flavour. Tossed with al dente pasta and finished with a sprinkle of fresh basil and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, this dish is a celebration of simplicity and sophistication that’s sure to impress even the most discerning palate.
