It’s Valentine’s Day around the corner. Whether you’re a skeptic or a hopeless romantic, it doesn’t matter to me. I think that even the biggest Valentine’s Day grinch doesn’t need an excuse to eat a delicious dinner.
I’ve put together some recipes for whatever your relationship or status on Valentine’s Day is. For those solo or for those looking into the eyes of your partner of 20 years, we want everyone to have a tasty time.
The new sweethearts
Are you still in the honeymoon period with your sweetheart? It can be tough when it comes up to a day like Valentine’s Day – do you buy a gift? Something big? Something small? Perhaps a classic bunch of flowers. But, perhaps the way to the heart is through their stomach. That is as the saying goes.
So, I say, the safest bet is putting on a delicious spread.
I’ve put together a three course meal that is restaurant worthy. But, I think it’s a little more special to put it together in your own home.
First course:
Baked brie, of course! It’s ooey and gooey and rich. It’s also very impressive. It’s the perfect starter, paired with a Bordeaux, you’re sure to impress.
Second course:
We’re talking elevated steak and chips. This is not a pub or bistro feed. This is a French restaurant in your own home. Steak frites with a bernaise sauce is what you would order in a beautiful venue. And, it’s what you cook to impress. Is there anything more impressive (and delicious) than a steak that’s cooked to perfection? I don’t think so!
Dessert:
Dessert, even for those who claim they don’t have a sweet tooth, is essential. You’re going to put on a display. I have a bit of a curveball for this one. And, hear me out. Make my Dutch Baby. Not to be confused making a real life baby later that night! It’s impressive and different. It can also be lighter if you want to save some room for… well… the rest of the evening.
Valentine’s Day? Galentine’s Day!
For those who don’t want to celebrate and buy into the ‘Hallmark holiday’ as we hear so many times, I suggest a girly feast! Bring together your best gal pals, write notes of affirmation for one another and drink too many champagnes. And, of course – feast! I think that an Italian feast is on the table. It’s so easy to do family style!
My suggestions? Lasagna and pizza – of course! My rich ragu lasagna might seem like a labour of love but it’s so worth it.
Also, cook along with me if it’s your first time making lasagna!
What pairs with lasagna? Some pizza, of course Making this dough from scratch is a sinch and you can even add whatever toppings you and your gals want.
Old lovers (we’ve done this before!)
For those that are used to spending Valentine’s Day together, it’s time to get impressive. Do something you wouldn’t normally do. And, let me ask you this – how often are you grilling lobster with garlic confit butter? I bet your answer is – not often (if ever!). What better way to surprise and delight your lover with garlic confit butter lobster tails. The sweet lobsters with the rich garlic confit is bound to blow them away.
Serve it alongside some breadcrumb tomatoes and you’re serving up a meal that is light but impressive and can be done quickly so that you can spend some quality time together.
Flying Solo
If you find yourself without a date on Valentine’s Day, it’s time to embrace this. I think there’s nothing more comforting than a delicious bowl of soup. Potato and leek soup is always a winning flavour combo. It’s classic and a bowl of love. Self love.
If you’re looking to ramp it up an extra level then there’s always the roasted tomato soup with a grilled cheese. Why? Well, is there anything more delicious to treat yourself with than a grilled cheese? Yeaaaaaah, I didn’t think so!
